Less Floor Now...
I pulled out more rotted sub floor today. The crawl space is dusty and full of old rotted wood, but nothing worse than that! One nifty "Ball Improved" jar came out of the space...in addition to what looks like an old electric car horn or speaker!!
I'll pull the floor to the halfway point for sure...and likely the whole thing. This will allow us to put in a new, solid floor all around! The good news on the wall is that the existing header will span the new door well. So once the floor is out it is all new build from there.
I must say I'm not too surprised with the rotted floor. And when we're all done, it will be great!
No more work until later in the week...as meetings will fill a few days. A few more picture are up from today's work!

Porch Progress!
Today I got much deeper into the porch! I pulled all of the baseboard and then the carpet. Then came the padding, tackstrip, and staples. Then I pulled some of the flooring up so I had access to the wainscoting at the bottom.
Then to the windows. I removed the interior framing so the wainscoting could come off. I then was able to remove the wainscoting...and find NO insulation anywhere. I shouldn't be surprised...but I was a bit disappointed.
I've now stripped the entire west wall around the southern pair of windows. Tomorrow I hope to do the same on the northern pair of windows and make some decisions on the floor.
The north end of the floor needs to be repaired all the way to the joists. I'm not yet sure if I need to do the same through the whole room or not.
There is a header the spans the entire length of the west wall over the windows. This is very welcome news...as I should be able to use it for the door and not have to replace it. I'll have to increase it's span slightly, but not more than about 18" beyond its current reach. Surprisingly, the header is really only now supported on each end of the west wall and once in the center with a double stud. So using it for the door should be slick.
Again...visit the album for pictures!

Starting the porch...
Time to begin the transition from a place to stick stuff to a useful gateway to the backyard. Tonight I pulled out the plywood floor on the north end and explored the window's behind.
Then to the squishy floor...to discover there is another crawlspace below this porch. It is not connected to the crawlspace under the kitchen...separated by the concrete back wall. It is about 18" deep, max.
The floor on the north end has to go...all the way down to the joists. We'll see how the rest is.
New photos are up in an album.

Deck Done!

Hey. There is a man on my deck!
Wouldn't it look nice to have an 8 foot sliding door where those four windows are! Stay tuned...
And thanks for watching. Now come help us use this thing!
More pictures here.

Stringers, stringers...
32 Stringers are now cut and ready. That was yesterday's project.
Today I'll fit each one and set the steps. More pictures are in the album!

Stepping Up...
We excavated for the stair base today. After some playing, I sized the stringers and decided their layout. I'll run a rim of rock with paver stones on top of them and place the base of the stair stringers on these... I added just a few pictures today to the album references in the previous post...

Old House Gets New Deck!
Okay, so much work has gone on in the past months with out a post! I'll have to get some posting done. The past few weeks, the project has been creating a deck on the back of the house.
Here is a pile of photos. Visit my album page to see them.
Now that the deck itself is complete, it is time to construct the stairs that will surround the deck on two sides.
Come on over and take a peek!
